Cody Fisher’s Silk To Egg

I am very happy to announce the release of a new product in the Cody Fisher magic line. In less than two weeks I will release my version of the classic effect “Silk To Egg”. I have been working on this particular release for the past year. It has taken longer than I had originally planned but as with all my releases I wanted it to be perfect.

I have been performing the standard silk to egg effect ever since I was in my early teens and did my very first magic show at a birthday party. It is a wonderful little effect in that it packs small and plays VERY big. This is also one of those tricks that is always very memorable from the viewpoint of the audience. I think the sheer ridiculousness (and simplicity) of the plot is what makes it so memorable.

Over the years this stand up piece has evolved considerably. The end result is a very unique piece of theatre that your audiences WILL remember. The basic concept is that is you invite someone from the audience up on stage and together you will ‘teach’ the rest of the audience the “silk to egg” trick. Your onstage volunteer follows along with their props and both of you manage to turn a silk into an egg! To the amazement of your audience YOU are able to show that YOUR egg has magically transformed into a real egg. As an added KICKER, your onstage volunteer is also able to show that THEIR egg is real as well!

This routine has been a staple of my stand up act for many years. It is one of the routines that I was very hesitant to release to the magic fraternity. I sincerely believe this to be one of the best routines that have released to date!

Oh Momma, I’m in fear for my life from the long arm of the law . . . and the only thing worse is a DVD full of sleights . . . unless it’s Cody Fisher’s Sleightly Original. Bottom line . . . if you’re a card guy, get this. You can stop reading now if you want. But if you want to know why you should get it keep reading . . . don’t worry, I won’t cry myself to sleep because you didn’t trust me and take me at my word . . . ok maybe I will, but only a little.

I got this DVD not knowing who Cody Fisher was/is. When I put it in the DVD player, I saw the titles, like In-Jog Riffle Force, Charlier Spread Pass, Fancy Fan Control, The Side Steal Bottom Palm, and I thought . . . “great . . . another card DVD with a bunch of stuff I read in Royal Road and Erdnase. I was further assaulted when Mr. Fisher gave his introduction that basically stated that this was a DVD with a bunch of classic sleights that he has tweaked and combined and/or made his own . . . hence the name “Sleightly Original.”

So I was pretty confident that I would not like this DVD. Man was I wrong. I really liked this DVD. It was entertaining to watch. It was extremely enlightening, and Fisher’s ideas and modifications to classics are more than note-worthy. They are clever, practical and will make you practice . . . something we need a lot more of in the Magic World. For $25 bucks you 10 solid sleights . . . forces, controls, palms, etc. His work on the Mercury Card Fold alone is worth the price. Definite Gem.

Cody Fisher’s Silk 2 Egg Getting RAVE Reviews!

Just found this review of my latest offering “Silk 2 Egg” over at The Magic Cafe!

Cody Fisher’s Silk 2 Egg Review By Cris Johnson

EFFECT: The Effect: The magician takes a silk and places it into his hand. One magical gesture and the silk is now an egg! The silk is shown to have magically transported to the magician’s pocket! The magician proceeds to let the audience in on the secret by exposing the fact that the egg is hollow and he was using two silks. Now that the audience completely understands, a volunteer is brought onstage, given two silks and a gimmicked egg and told to copy the magicians every action.

This is done and both the magician and the volunteer have magically transformed their silk into an egg. The magician says that this is the EASY way to do the trick; the more advanced version is to remove the silk (sticker) and crack the egg to show that it is actually a REAL egg!

The magician says that he feels the onstage volunteer is a quick learner and they are instructed to do the same with their gimmicked egg. To the amazement of the onstage volunteer they do just that! They pull off the silk; it is actually a sticker now! They crack the egg into the glass! Their egg is 100% REAL too and they have NO IDEA how they did it!

PRODUCT DETAILS: An extremely detailed manuscript with color photos, illustrations and extremely detailed description.

DIFFICULTY: IF you’re familiar with the traditional silk to egg effect, you have an idea of the difficulty. It’s maybe a 2 or 3 in terms of technical difficulty and maybe a 3 or 4 in difficulty in terms of spectator management. NOTE: I do not consider this a difficult routine in any way, but I want to emphasize that spectator management, while not difficult, is crucial for the success of this effect…but it’s NOT difficult.

When you read how the effect works, it reads as very ballsy, but really, this is not difficult for the experienced performer who is already comfortable interacting with audience volunteers.

QUALITY OF INSTRUCTION: Phenomenal. These days, I prefer learning magic by DVD, but I can’t imagine a printed booklet that could teach this effect any better. Cody’s done a great job with this. An easy 10 out of 10.

MY THOUGHTS: WOW. That’s my reaction in a nutshell. First, a bit of history…I’ve got my own handling of the silk to egg effect and it’s always been an audience pleaser. After 12 years of performing it, I consider silk to egg to be a very reliable ” go to” effect. I would never dream of changing it until…

I read this! In all honesty, Cody called me a few months ago and told me about this. Hearing him excitedly describe it made it sound very cool, but I’m not good at absorbing instructions verbally (when someone explains things to me verbally, I often forget it instantly.)

After receiving the booklet, I was thrilled with how this plays. Also, let’s be clear: this is a WORKER, meaning it will play for laypeople!

So many effects created these days are pipe dreams and really aren’t suited to the pro who cranks out 200+ shows a year. This one is really a worker within reach of any pro.

What I like about this is the amount of detail available to the working pro – things like transporting the real eggs, how to make your own egg “sticker” a la the Viking stickers, blocking, and most importantly, how the easygoing, fun script suitably conditions the onstage volunteer to cooperate with you…without becoming a stooge! That’s another key point – there are no instant stooge aspects to this, as the volunteer will be just as amazed as everyone else.

It’s not often that a new twist on a classic effect comes along that truly advances the original effect and this truly is the rare exception – you’ve got all of the benefits of the classic silk to egg with the fun interaction of an onstage volunteer (most other handlings are solo effects with the performer alone onstage) melded with an unbelievable twist ending.

This, along with Shoe Business, goes on my short list of best effects of 2011. It’s an instant classic and comes with my highest recommendation. A 10 out of 10.

Cody’s Comedy Confabulation–Magic Review!

When I was surfing the net I came across this independent review for my “Comedy Confabulation”. Enjoy!

Cody Fisher is a working pro. He has released many audience-tested materials. What I personally like about his routines is that they are commercial, entertaining and practically yet do not skimp on the magical method needed to accomplish the effect. This routine was originally made available as an e-book and is now available as a small printed booklet.

His Comedy Conflabulation is another example of an outstanding routine by Cody. The original Conflabulation routine by Alan Saxon allowed the performer to predict 3 different items that were revealed in a prediction folded up in his wallet at the end of the routine. There are a few “problems” associated to the original method and subsequent handlings that can tip the method or allow a smart audience to reconstruct the method.

Cody’s routine solves the main problems with the standard Confabulation handlings and the method also creates in-built entertainment into the routine. In a sense, it is a perfect solution because the method also functions as the presentation framework.

If you are a working performer and intend to perform a Conflabulation routine, you will appreciate the thinking, routine and entertainment value. However, if you only to buy this to learn the secret, you might not see the value in paying US$40 for this booklet. You need to make and provide all the items needed in the routine but they are available easily through stationary shops and magic dealers.

For the working or regular performer looking for a powerful and entertaining stage mentalism routine – 5 out of 5 stars.

Start Planning Your Holiday Party Today

Year after year the Holiday party gets harder and harder to plan. The demands get difficult to satisfy and the old bag of tricks may not fit the bill. This biggest mistake is putting this off until a few months before your event. Most professional event planners have their entertainment booked 9-12 monhts in advance! (We have actually been book out as far as 3 years in advance!) Start thinking about your holiday parties NOW. Here are a couple of ideas that may add some spice for your companies next holiday event.

1. Audience involvement. Think about ways you can get everyone involved, perhaps an interactive game, talent show or interactive comedy magic show. The more involved everyone gets the more fun they will have and these are terrific ways to stimulate the interaction. Imagine your guests not simply watching a show…but actually being a part of the show. This is something that will create memories that will last a lifetime.

2. Give them a show that will bring the group together and make them happy they are attending their holiday event. It is hard to beat quality entertainment to take someone away from the daily routine. Keep in mind that the best entertainers will get booked early! Give them the best you got and watch them laugh and rave about the evening for years.

3. Give them variety. The band is always fun, the DJ can play great songs, but for new and exciting, you cannot beat the novelty of a variety act. Get creative, think out of the box and bring a show or performer that will blow their minds. Not the same old thing, but something new and exciting. Something that will make them sit up and take notice, something that will be the talk of the water cooler for the next several months.

4. Give them the FUNNY. Everyone likes to laugh. Give them some quality entertainment that will have them fall down laughing out of their chairs (appropriate humor only) and you will have a happy group.

Product Review: Pack Flat Illusions For Kids & Family Shows By J.C. Sum

I don’t normally fill my professional blog with “Magic Reviews” but every once and a while I don’t mind changing things up for a good reason! I have long been a fan of J.C. Sums releases to the magic community. From my viewpoint he is a “real world worker” who has performed professionally in many different types of venues. From his humble beginnings in the B-Day party market to Fortune 500 corporate extravaganzas, J.C. Sum clearly demonstrates he has a vast body of knowledge in many different areas of the entertainment market.

His latest release is focused on the kid and family show market, specifically illusions. Having read his other illusion books I pretty much knew what to expect. Once again he delivers the goods. Each illusion is meticulously explained and illustrated in a clear and concise manner. You don’t need to be a master carpenter to put most of these ideas to life and into your show.

The book outlines 8 unique illusions for the family show entertainer. There are several unique production boxes, a few child production illusions, an interesting aquarium illusion, and a super cool vanishing head / twister illusion. While all the illusions in the book are all very unique, the two that really stand out for me are the “The Gift Box” and “The Birthday Cake Table”.

The Gift Box is a wonderful, low cost / easy build, illusion that you could put together in a few minutes. It allows you the ability to produce just about anything that will fit into the box! I really like the logic and thinking behind this one. The second one that really stands out for me was The Birthday Cake Table. This unique table design will allow you to magically produce a B-day cake. The workings are very clever and will produce the cake ‘safely’ at any time during your show. Imagine using “The Gift Box” to magically produce a very special present for the B-Day child then follow it up by magically producing the B-Day cake! If you are doing B-Day shows, these two illusions alone would be a strong selling point for any B-Day show.

For larger family shows I really like “Super Saver Delivery”. This is a FANTASTIC child production that you can build for less than a $100. The great part about this is your assistant will be able to perform this with only minimal pre-show instruction.

I really like the content of this book. I think there is a lot of creativity in the ideas and variety in the methodologies that J.C. presents. I can honestly say that if I was still in the B-Day market I would without hesitation add “The Gift Box” and “The Birthday Cake Table” to my show. In fact I would probably focus my marketing around these two tricks alone! Imagine telling the B-Day child’s mom that you can magically produce their ‘special gift’ from mom and dad AND then magically produce the B-Day cake as a finale! That show would be booked!

In conclusion, if you are a family show or B-Day show performer I think you will get some very good ideas from this book. As with all of J.C.’s releases I can highly recommend this as material that is suitable for working professionals.
